3:55 or 3:73 gears....Need advice

I got a pretty much all stock 95 GT that has just a few basic bolt on things/exhaust system. I'm gonna change the gears in her but Im stuck on which gears I should get....3:55 or 3:73. I want to gain the low end torque without losing much on my top end so Im unsure on which to go with. I know everybody says to go with 3:73 gears but I dont know enough to know what the big difference is between the two. I want it to be worth my time but Im not trying to make it into a drag car just yet cause the whole cost of doing so is stopping me. I basically want to achieve an everyday driving car that has a little bit more move to it than just a normal stock one would have. Feel free to leave any other suggestions if you think it would be best to go another direction. THanks all! |

Differential Gear Ratio determines the number of times the drive shaft (or pinion) will rotate for each turn of the wheels (or ring gear). So if you have a 3.73:1 gear ratio the drive shaft turns 3.73 times for every turn of the wheel.
Gear ratio is calculated by dividing the number of teeth on the ring gear by the number of teeth on the pinion gear. The higher the number, the lower the ratio: a 5.29 gear has a lower ratio than a 4.10 gear. With a lower gear ratio the drive shaft (and thus the engine) turns more for each revolution of the wheel, delivering more power and torque to the wheel for any given speed. Lower ratios are generally desirable when going off-road. Higher ratios are better for freeway driving since they run at lower RPM’s and offer better fuel economy
I've found the 3:73 to be a good overall gears sometime I wish I had the 4:10 But I'm happy with the 3:73 And With The Climbing Gas Prices, Go 3:55 If You Do A Lot Of Highway Driving. If You Stay On Streets Then The 373's Will Work

I have the 3.73's as well and I really like them....there's not much of a difference between the 3.55's and 3.73's so i would say go with the 3.73's.....you're not going to gain much in MPG if you drop to the lower gears. |

3.73, you wont notice jack with 3.55 some cars came stock with them.if u decide on 3.55 i got 5 used sets on the shelf.

Hmm...I may want a set as well for the fox now that I Think about it. Trade you my 4.10's that are in the rear end at the house for a set of those 3.55's. |

neither...4.10's...that is all...
Unless you are already or intend to go FI in the never near future, 4.10's would work best for your application...
If you are or will be going FI, then 3.73's...

4.10's are really low for that tranny....first gear is 3.35 so in slow traffic the car will buck and jerk |

Is this an automatic or manual?
The general rule that most go by is 3.73s for a manual, 4.10s for an automatic. |

i always run 4.10s on a n/a combination.. they are most effective.

3.55 vs 3.73 is very minimal in difference, go 3.73

What all will you want? Obviously the ring and pinion, anything else from it like spider gears or anything? |

not enough to matter, even with 4:10s its not very significant because it doesent take as much power to get the car moving but loses it on long drives, so it balances out.

in my 01 v6 with 3.73, cai, upd, and exhaust (manual trans) I would get 22mpg city/hwy mix. I would say you will lose 2mpg on the highway maybe 3 and gain about 1 in the city.

Hey all, thanks for the great info/advice. I greatly appreciate it. Im gonna go ahead and go with the 3:73's...as that sounds like the best thing for me at this time.
