ATI will ALWAYS have a backseat to Nvidia IMO, my cards will blow it out of the water. 880 GTS SSC SLi, I take great pride in my GIANT computer penis.

I had a Radeon 9800XT. It was the baddest-assedest card at the time. I haven't run anything but nVidia's since then, but I don't have any allegiance to either side. Whatever meets my price/performance point.

Well see the problem with badassness at the moment is the fact that thy day after you tell someone " OMFG my graphics card is Uber 1337", they release a new one so NO ONE will ever really be on top, unless your made of money. I am thinking of upgrading to the 9800 GX2's 2 of them, or maybe running three-way SLi with some 880 GTX's.

So is this what AMD has been focusing on for the past couple years?
Now that they have ATi back on track, they need to get their CPU lineup on top again.

I used to always buy whatever was top of the line. My thinking was that I would get more useable time out of the highest-end card (or processor, or whatever). I've since realized that you can get almost exactly the same time of use out of the card that's two or three steps down from the top for half as much money, or less.

Well, that might have been true, until ATI decided to release the 4870. I'm not a fan boy of either company. I've owned ATI card and currently own two 8800GT's in SLI and a 7900GS in the other server computer. Before that though I owned nothing but ATI and 3DFX.
I do admit I try to support the underdog cause monopolies suck. I bought all AMD up until my last computer where AMD offered nothing to compete with the Quad Core Intel I have right now.
Hopefully though the next computer I build will be AMD pimped out with Crossfire

I have had Both AMD and Intel, I will always prefer AMD do to the company's committment to always be right there with Intel. Intel With it's much deeper pockets it's attempts to strong arm it's partner's to do what they will or else has been a strategic blunder and watched AMD eat there lunch and take there partners and pulled ATI out from under Intel's nose. Who is currently on top means little to me. I was a 100% 3DFX loyal until nvidia bought themselves out of a lawsuit with 3DFX and purchased them outright. So I stayed with nvidia but I believe I am going to go with ATI with my next computer.
