This might be a stupid question but I always wondered about it:
Is it better on a big hill to keep on the brakes lightly and consistently or to brake a bit harder and shorter (sort of pump the brakes every 3-5 seconds or so)?

None of the above...Ease off the gas and downshift...
Breaking going down big hills is a quick way to overheat and wear out brakes quick...

i was actually wondering this as well. I just got back from Lake Tahoe and downhill its all downhill on Hwy50.
I dont like to ride my brakes, so i usually did a short pump to bring me from 65 to 55, then wouldnt have to use the brakes for another minute or so, so they would cool off. Thinking about it, this type of braking should be no more different than driving downtown. your brakes are spinning faster but you are using them at shorter periods and longer intervals between.
i was mostly engine braking though, i was in 4th and 5th most the time iirc. i dont like to engine brake too high though, i heard prolonged engine braking can lead to premature ring and cylinder wall tear. i think thats for mostly bikes and high compression motors but eh, i was hanging out mostly at 2k coasting downhill and only had to apply brakes in certain sections.
i would recommend against just keeping on them and riding them downhill. you will warp the rotors extremely fast.

engine braking doesn't hurt the rings as much as it does the transmission and rearend because you are putting torque on the gears opposite of what they are designed for.the rings see oil from the pump anyway.

I just went through the smoky mountains and did both at the same time i would think that would be less wear and tear on both.

I see your point but if your brakes dont work when your going down a hill your f***ed. At the same time if your tranny goes you aint making it up the next one. So i guess its whats more important at the time. I personally think my tranny can take a bit more than the brakes can.
