I recently purchased 4.10's for my 97 Mustang 3.8/5spd. I'm not sure if I made a mistake? My very short mods list include a Mac fender mount cold air intake, BBK throttle body, 01 GT dual exhaust with custom x pipe and Mac underdrive pulleys. After reading people's posts they say they only get a top speed of about 72 mph. I've also read that if I tune the car I'll only get about 85 mph out of it, is this true? Will I be able to correct my speedo with a tune or a cable? Any in site would greatly be appreciated!!!

well, the reason their top speed is so low is because they didn't retune the car. If you retune it, especially with 4.10's, you should be able to wrap 5th out to redline. I highly doubt you wouldn't be able to break 100 in that situation. However, you won't NEED to break 100 mph... You can use a speed cal (I think?) to recalibrate the speedo, or you can get a tuner and it'll do it for you, and remove the speed limiter

4.10 are too short for a 5-speed, I had them for a while and 1st gear was just for show, i always had to pull away form red lights and stop signs in 2nd so it would spin. I'd say 3.55's for all aorund use or 3.73's for drag racing on fridays.

I've driven a procharged 5 speed with 4.10s... they seem great if you can handle it. " don't fear the gear "

yeah their fun, but that's it, you just spin all over and will hate driving down the highway at 2500rpm at 70mph.

you must get a tune to fix the speedo issue, no way around it, its rpm limited if I remember right not mph, if you cant afford the 2-3 mph you will lose on the interstate then do a diff gear like a 3.73 (not much better)

I guess I'll live and learn. The reason I went with 4.10's is because I just blew up my slightly modded 02' GT due to a bad factory oil pump, I wanted to feel a little snap from light to light with my old 3.8. I also wouldn't mind taking down a few Civics on the way lol...

on a 97 I don't think you need a tune, I think you just put in the correct speedo gear and that's it.

4:10s are not too short.. we put 4.10s in 500hp cobras all day and can leave in 1st gear fine.i wont run anything other than 4.10s on a car under 450rwhp. i think 97 takes a programmer to calibrate it.and interstate top speed is barely affected(2-3mph as stated earlier)

the only reason i would say 4.10s are to short is the 3.8L he has peaks REALLY early in the rpm band so he will run out of rpm about 2,200 faster than a 6k redline peak car would~
a speedo gear is the only way to fix the speedo (and it wont be perfect so you will have a speedo that reads to fast) but the chip is needed to fix the rpm shut off.
I would go with a speedcal to fix the speedo issue if you can use one on your year car.

I think that 4.10's for an AUTO v6 are fine, but not a stick, I hated mine.
Spector, thank you for proving my point

A cobra and a v6 only share bodies, so the rear gear theory doesn't apply the same. Espescially considering the tranny differences. 6ers also don't have the extra weight of a 6th gear holding them back lol

yea, that 5th gear in the 5 speed helps a little tho over the auto, and the cobra might have a little more weight but twice the torque. personal opinion tho.. i dont care if he runs 2.73 or 5.30s im just letting him know what ive done in the past and gotten away with.

I had 4.10's on my 02 sixer and it was really too much. my first gear didn't exist i would have to shifgt out of it super fast and usually just left in second because of that. Now that gas is so high i wouldnt reccomend them either, my highway milage went to shit with 4.10's

I ran 4.10s in mine and got sick of it. Went back to 3.73 and am going smaller next time I swap rear ends out.
With a car that red lines a touch over 5K, it's a waste. Sure on a 4 cam motor they work awesome with the higher reving motor- but that doesn't matter at all.... you're not driving a Cobra. If it's going for a pure street car, I'd go 3.73.
