Ok, I'm looking to do the 2 cylinder upgrade this spring
I'm wondering what the hp and tq numbers are on the base GT after 96 (the introduction of the 4.6L) I know it was 225 hp in 95-96. I'm looking into getting a GT this spring and would like to maximize the power to cash ratio!

If you could find one that has had PI, or 99+ heads installed on it the hp is about the same or maybe a little more than the 99+ or 260 hp, other than that though I think its about 225, or the same as the last 5.0s. The head swap will get you equal or more hp to the 99+. If you p&p the heads, and get hi po cams then you can increase it by another 50-100 hp they say. Aftermarket intakes are in the works and already on the market by several different mfg. see www.modularfords.com.

I am not a big drag racing expert, but I think up until the 03s, GTs used to give Cobras a hard time on the dragstrip, esp if the GT had even a few minor mods.

with factory stock cars GT's always seemed to get the jump on the Cobra's out of the hole but at the 4000 RPM area the GT was starting to only see taillights

With stock cars the GT was rated about 45 or 50 hp less from 99 to 01, in 03 they started to be rated about 130 hp less, If the cobra couldn't outrun a stock GT there was something terribly wrong with the Cobra, stock for stock at least

The 99+ GT power band comes on sooner the 98-02 Cobra with its 4 cam design is long winded and at about 4000 RPM the Cobra motor is just really coming alive

hmmm, If I remember when Ashentep and I both got dynoed, he had a lot more rwhp than me, but I think we were pretty close on torque.

But it is when the hp comes Gt's just blow there wad sooner the Cobra keeps building power long after the GT has spent. That is why at about mid way down the track the Cobra passes the GT

If I ever had serious engine trouble the first thing I would do would be to look for a good low mileage Cobra 4V engine, no doubt, then I would just have a cobra in a GT body, lol.
