Your Suggestions on Exhaust Systems

I was thinking about getting a dual side exhaust kit, but I got to talking with my uncle. He raced a lot back in his day in his 61 Corvette and he told me I shouldn't go spending my money on things that just make the car sound louder. So instead I'm looking for an exhaust system that will also add on some horse power, does anyone know if the dual side exhaust kit adds anything? Suggestions are greatly appreciated  |

all exaust pretty much adds the same amount of hp/tq. Be it side or rear exit.
Roush makes a side exaust kit along with borla and spintech. Those are the ones I know off the top of my head. If you get side exaust make it look right and get the side skirts for it. |

Ford Racing sells one. It's just a Borla Side Exhaust, for the kit, they all hang around $600. |

if you want to gain horsepower as well as sound, then you want a "true dual" exhaust system... here's your options...
you can either start from the engine and replace the entire exhaust system with headers (long tube or shortie), h or x pipe, mufflers (borla, spintech, flowmaster, etc,) and tail pipes (or get GT takeoffs online, you get gt mufflers and the polished tailpipes, they look nice) ...this is especially good if you'll be doing extensive engine upgrading in the near future...
but, if you're not at all, or not within the year, what you can do is take your car to a performance shop and have them cut your exhaust off after the stock catalytic converters. they can weld on an h or x pipe on and you can get the gt takeoffs or pick your mufflers and tailpipes. this is the cheaper option, though it has less potential than a full exhaust swap. you'll have 2 or 3 less hp right away too. but then, this is the way to go if all you'll be getting are bolt on mods...
if i managed to confuse you, i'm sure one of the other guys will help straighten you out...

Dynomax makes a nice Side exhaust kit. Roush use to use Dynomax and switched to Magnaflows which alot of Roush people dont like.

I think I was looking at the Dynomax side exhaust kit, it's like $685 right?
I also found flowmasters have a dual exhaust for a 3.8 '98 Stang, at least if I am looking at the diagram correctly lol and it's about $482 |

Ah I see what you mean, forget that idea then I'd rather go True Dual than something like that. I'd probably have to shop around for new headers and then somewhere else for the cats and mufflers right?
Then again Extreme Effects has a great page on those too

No you dont need new header or cats you just have to cut the pipes just aft of the cats. That is all and a muffler shop will weld the dual pipes on

I will be buying the Mac Flowpath Dual exaust kit from them when I get my new v6 here in a couple of months. I think I have decided to go with the high flow cat kit. |

Hrm so I'd probably get the 2 1/2 HTS Coated Off Road H-Pipes & Catback System rather than the 2 1/2 HTS Coated H-Pipes w/cats & Catback System because like Danger Dude said I'd just cut the pipes just after the cats so buying new ones would be kinda a waste?

id get 2 1/4 inch piping... 2 1/2 inch piping has been known to loose a bit of torque down low.

If you buy the off road one you lose the cats. The off road kit replaces all the pipes that connect from the headers back(does not replace headers just from the headers back) |

I believe I understand then, what makes them off road is they just don't have cats. I should be looking at the other one then, dang I thought I'd be paying less too lol |

Hey Seph I am not sure what mods you have or are considering in the future but at this time if you are near stock you might consider leaving your headers alone. The stock 98 headers are good to 300 hp and then they loose efficiency. So if you are stock 150 hp which is about 100-110 RWHP you might be wasting money. Now saying that I had a problem with my stock cats and they could have been a problem for a while That is why I have a off road H Pipe ( MAC catted H Pipes have been on Back order everywhere for a while so I went with off road till the time I add put high flow catts back on) You need to have them checked. How many miles do you have on your car
