Have a 96 GT / 5spd that I bought and it has some gremlins. Shifting to fifth it will not go in as all of the other gears go in, if shifted hard it will sometimes go in otherwise it grinds, Linkage or bad trans ??

Synchros on 5th go out all the time. I would put my money on that as well.

if you go through all gears smoothly except the 5th, it's most probably the synchronizer. how's it though when you shift to reverse?

Just a thought check that the clutch is adjusted properly by taking a look in thru the fork hole opening of the bell housing and verify the face of the throw out bearing is 1/4" away from the fingers of the pressure plate with the pedal at the rest position. If the clutch checks out and you still have grinding, the only thing left is the blocking rings and syncros

Reverse is a little tricky also but not any where as bad as fifth. a little grinding once in a while.

5th and reverse share the same shift rail/fork that's why I asked Sounds like you'll need a blocker ring, and possibly the 5th slider you can always double clutch till you get it fixed

Just check with TKO performance they say the problem might be the sliding sleeve
5th uses a brass synchro, even on a WC T5. My guess is the sliding sleeve is torn up. Here's the trick, flip it over and use the good side, because it only works one way for 5th gear. You can do the repair by just removing the tailshaft housing. You won't affect the endplay setup, so the hard part of setting up a T5 isn't even an issue.
