So, basically this summer I want to buy a 5.0 engine from a junkyard near my house. they part out foxbodies to they have a good amount of them. But they all seemed Kinda shitty.

What kinda things should i look for.
What should i ask?
What should i check?
They all had their fair share of rust on them and ect.

They were all complete and only like 200 bucks.

I also wanna rebuild it somewhat.
But I dont have much "internal engine" experiance.

Give me some pointers.

First thing I do to any motor on inspection (if you cant hear it run) is grab the harmonic balancer and pull in and out. This will tell you the condition of the main thrust bearing. If it moves in and out noticable stay away!! Next you can check cranking compression. Look for even numbers (+/- 5psi) across all 8 cylinders.
External rust isnt a major concern as long as the fasteners are able to be turned. $200 is a great price on a nice 5.0. Are you planning on going EFI or carbed?

Ill just stay EFI probably.

Yea, theres a yard of all fox bodies a town away from me, the guy has high mileage and low milege engines in there.
A buddy i work with father knows the owner, so ill be lucky and get a nice one for ~ 200.

Thanks for the tips!

get low miles, if U can, but a nice 86 engine is a good bet,
those have pistons w/o valve reliefs and will generate higher
compression which is nice, and the pistons are forged too.

I spec V8 combos too, so just ask!
