Since my Haines manual is still in PA, does anyone know where I can get a diagram of the fuel tank/filler neck. Or, does anyone know if there is a gasket where the filler neck meets with the tank itself? I filled up tonight and could smell gas the entire way home. I parked and as soon as I go out I saw gas dripping back there. I stuck my hand up and there is a rubber piece where the neck enters the tank and thats defiantely where it's coming from. Would I have to drop the tank if it was a gasket? Do I need a whole new tank and filler neck? Any advice would be helpful. Thanks

Yea there is a gasket where the filler goes into the tank. You can just buy the gasket... but as far as replacing it... yea you have to drop the tank somewhat.

You don't have to drop the tank, give me a few and I'll find the link. Wish I would have known before dropping mine a second time to do it....

Well..in searching I can't find it again.
Go to Ford, buy the rubber grommet.
Pull the bolts out of the top of the filler neck in the gas door, take the bolt out on the top side of where it connects to the tank (I believe it's on the top)
You're supposed to be able to pull it without dropping the tank.
Go ahead and get the tank under 1/4 tank to make sure you have no major leakage. If you do have to drop the tank just lower it enough to get the neck out, you won't have to disconnect anything other than a few electrical connections.

Or this:
There is a rubber seal that goes on the gas tank that the fuel filler neck goes through. These go bad sometimes, I just put one on my car awhile back for the same reason. Just undo your filler neck( 3 bolts inside where your gas cap is), undo the strap that is around the filler neck that is connected by 1 bolt to the tank, put a jack with a board on it under your tank to support it, undo the tank straps and lower the tank a bit, pull the filler neck out, pull the old tank seal out, pop the new one in, heres where you might need to 2 people: Slowly raise the tank into position while the other person guides the filler neck through the new seal, put tank straps back on, put the strap on the filler neck back on, put your filler neck bolts back in and smile, cause you are now leak free!
Also, use a little lube to get the new one in there...make your life easier. Keep some petroleum jelly around for it.
We really should make a sticky/write up on this. These are starting to go out more and more on mustangs...
