give me your pics of your wheels and tires. 17x9 rims with either 275/40's or 285/40's.

I don't think anybody here has 285s on 17x9s. I could be wrong though.

275/40/17s are the BEST fit 285s will give the sidewall more height and you dont want that.... yokahoma AVE ES100s are 129 each in a 275 VERY nice tire and KUMO SUCK lol for 45 bucks more~ you can have yokahoma's 10000x better

285/40's are the same height as 255/45's (which i have now). i'm trying to keep as much sidewall as i can for ride and WIFE considerations.

114.00 mm side wall height on teh 285/40/17 vs 110.00 mm sidewall height on the 275/40/17 so they are rather close, 4 mms is 2 top and bottom it takes 25mm to be an inch so its rather little, so either would work fine.

keep in mind that 285's will feel the road a lil more then the 275's, so if its ride you want. i have 275/40's on 18's and you can feel everything in the road. so i can only inmagine 285's, although with the slightly larger sidewals you get a lil less vibration. also with 285's you WILL need front spacers, like i said with my 275 i could only turn the wheel 85-90% they rub the sway bars beczuse the tires are over the wheel lip so much. i put 7/32" spacers and now i have almost full capabilities(99%), so if your wife is driving the car make sure she knows, my girlfriend used to forget, cut the wheel in a parking lot.. (which by the way is HELL if you dont have the spacers, 5 point turns getting out of a parking space sucks)and it sounded like she was ripping the front end off. just forewarning you
