I want to change my gear set up but I cant find any places that sell the whole back end which i will need to upgrade to an 8.8 gears. Also would a 7.5 from ford racing benfit me enough? What would be the best way to go?

for 90% of people that don't race much and don't want to use sticky tires, gears and a tlok in your stock 7.5 will be fine. depending on the deal, the 8.8 will cost you about the same or 100+ more but you can run slicks at the drag.

if you plan for your car to ever see any track time go ahead and get an 8.8 its not much more if any depending on install costs.... www.gefracing.com has 8.8s you can get around 800 bucks last time i checked you can get a used 8.8 pretty cheap also if you look around, but its alwasy better to buy new so you know what you are getting.

no its not the gears is the weak spider gears that break usually as long as you dong go to the track it will be fine, unless you get a POS install and the gears whine and break.

so the only thing that will help me out is getting a bigger differential like an 8.8? The gears dont matter then? I am confused. All in all what would help me out if i dont want to upgrade to the 8.8? What would i need if I wanted to get the 8.8?
thanks

the gears matter alot i dont think you get it an 8.8 is the size of the differential and 4.10 and 3.73 are the gear ratios, by the looks of it you dont need an 8.8 you already have a 7.5 diff incase you didnt know that , so all you have to do is get some 4.10's im assuming your car is auto if its manual get 3.73's and get a t-lok you dont need an 8.8

Thank you very much. Also is a t-lok, a separate peace or what. Is all the gears and sizes a limited slip or is that something different. Sorry for all the questions but I thought i new what i was talking about till today.

a t-lok will replace your open diff which only allows one whell to spin with a t-lok (limited slip) both your whells spin
now gears will get you better acceleration like i said if you have an auto get 4.10 if you have a manual get 3.73's

you don't need an 8.8 without some major shit done to your car, like nitro turbo or supercharger. 7.5 is plenty capable of lasting through anything a bolt on V6 could throw at it.

It's going to cost $170 for gears and $200+ for the install. You might as well get a complete 8.8 rear for $300 and change and actually make it right and reliable.

the 7.5 and 8.8 are 2 different animals. the 7.5 is stock on mustang v6's, and the 8.8 is stock on gt's. the 7.5 is smaller and weaker, not really up to the stress of racing. recommended for daily driving and an *occasional* trip to the track... the 8.8 is the beast.. bigger, stronger and better built. it's able to take a lot more wear and tear before it goes out on you. if you're running over 250rwhp and plan on running even more, then you might as well switch to an 8.8 now, it'll save you the cost of a swap later on...
if you have a manual tranny, then you'll want 3.73 gears, no matter which differential you get. if you have an automatic, then you'd be better off with 4.10's. it has to do with shifting and rotation, or so i'm told
but yes, if you plan on racing a lot, or building your engine up over 300-ish hp, then i'd say just jump up to the 8.8. better safe than sorry
also, a good mod to do at the same time would be to get an aluminum driveshaft put on, they run around 130$... it'd save labor charges to get both mods done at the same time

I dont really plan on having a race car, I just want it to be fast and be able to go driving with my friends. My friend is my mechanic and very knowledgeable about cars. Getting the 3.73 gears with my 7.5 should be fine because i dont plan on again "Making a race Car". Just need the little more acceleration for the feel of it, along with the t-lok. Well thats what i think. But if anyone can see or get me a used 8.8 let me know please because it is worth it, but I dont want to spend that $ and not use it.

as long as you never go to a real race track and run your car the 7.5 will be fine if the stuff is installed right, but.... its only 200 more~ for an 8.8 in the end.... do it right and get and 8.8 or you will be sorry down the line. I know I am you never know what you will be doing with the car later on.
