I was wondering how much worse gas mileage I'll get with 4.10 gears. I have a 2001 Mustang, v-6, and right now, I get an honest 27.5 when I'm driving like a good boy. When I'm not, it falls off to I don't know what, but what kind of gas mileage could I expect with the 4.10 gears? Is it worth the loss of gas just for the increase in acceleration?... are 4.10 gears better than 3.73?

well with my 01 v6 manual with all my mods listed and 3.73 gears i manage 22mph if i drive good/city highway mix make sure you are checking it right by filling up and going till empty then filling up and divide the miles you went by how much gas you put back in.
you should see 2-3mpg drop on the highway and 1-2 gain in the city.

how much faster is your car? Also, which is better 4.10 or 3.73? How much should I put back for install?.... is it worth it to get the shift kit at the same time?... will I have to worry about breaking some other part of my car?

3.73 are worth 2.5 tenths on a 99 up and 4.10s about another tenth off your times. i would not upgrade the 7.5 only buy an 8.8 but if you do the install should be 200-400 bucks depending on how bad you gear your butt hole raped

if you do alot of highway driving at high speeds with 4.10s, you're gonna blow your engine, well not blow it but decrease it's life drastically. i have 3.73s and i'm doing around 4,000 rpms at 98mph. with 4.10s it's gonna be higher.
i'll give you a specific number tommorow.
but yes, acceleration is much, much better.

you wont mess up anything.... your rpms will be 400 more~ with 4.10s in a 99 up, do you see 99 ups not lasting as long as pre 99s? the pre 99s have 2.73 vs 99 ups 3.27 thats a diff of .50~ vs 3.27 up to 3.73 for a diff of 50~ and 4.10s are only 200 rpms higher.... by the time it will matter you wont care or the motor will run out of life from other reasons

if you say so, just don't say i didn't warn you. 3.27s to 4.10s make a world of difference.

moving to v6 tech...
my 00 v6 5spd had 4.10's... they were about right for the car. 4.30's for auto should be good.
gas mileage highway went from 28 to 23 or so. a friend of mine got 24-25 with another 00 v6 5spd and 4.10's. i strongly recommend at least 4.10's if not 4.30's. 3.73's on an auto is weaksauce. and yes, a shift kit will make a big difference.
don't fear the gear.
