If it's an auto tranny it is most likely an AOD. Wonderfully finicky transmissions.

an AOD is what it came with. they do have some problems but all in all not the worst at all. If you do start having problems just go ahead and yank it out and get a quality rebuild

I would look more at your timing. Than your spark plugs.

Base timing should be 10 degrees. Just use a timing light to see where it's at and then turn the distributor to get it at the proper spot. There is one bolt that holds it in place and make sure you check the timing after you re-tighten the bolt because it's easy to move the distributor when tightening it.

just blowing right out the carb??
I'd be willing to guess that you have the distributor installed 180* out... most common cause for problems during 5.0 rebuilds

Whoops, I should read the whole thread next time, my apologies
You're getting proper fuel delivery without having the engine flood on first start?
by not idling do you mean it'll crank, fire then die right out, or crank, idle a bit then shut off?

Is the carb new? how does the car run when you play with the throttle? if you keep giving it gas, or tapping the gas - does it run a bit, then die as soon as you try to let it idle? Carbs can be touchy, and definitely let me know what happens after you fix that vacuum leak
