So painting a car in winter....

Yea so my dad doesnt think painting a car in winter is a good idea. We have a spray room but it isnt heated. Insulated but not heated.
What kind of problems would we run into with say 40 degree highs and 30 lows? |

Well being the paint expert I am for the Air Force, I would HIGHLY or Strongly agree with your dad. Painting in cold temps is not a good thing. Most paints are chemically and temperture cured. If you paint when it's too cold your paint would take forever to cure if it does cure, or it won't cure at all. You could end up freezing the catalyst in your paint and then your paint won't cure at all and could possibly cause your paint to freak out on you. When painting anything, you want usually a minimum of 70*, but 60* is close enough, and you want a slight humidity. At 70*, it would take about 30 days for your paint to completely cure, at 40* it would take about 3 months if at all. You did say your "booth" is insulated, so maybe you could get a portable heater and if it works good you might be able to get the "booth" up to temp long enough to paint and then let the paint cure. The paint should be at 70* for at least for 12 hours then it's considered driveable, but not washable.

can you not use a heater to keep it really hot in there?

get some kerosene or eletrical heaters and keep that sucker really hot so it will dry in no time.

those jet heaters would keep it hot. that's what we used in our house when we were building it, and it got HOT.

FIRE haha just be safe when you do that, I would try to get into a booth... at carmax when we paint a car we bake it at 150* for a set amount of time... we can spray a car in the morning and have it on the front lot after detail by 2pm that day,.,.

Those jet heaters are awesome. I used one renovating a house that had no heater in it.
