Hey guys, had the service engine soon come on today (at least I noticed it anyhow) Just had the oil changed and inspection done friday too.
I don't think anything is out of the norm so far, checked the gas cap, oil, air filter, I'm planning on taking it to autozone or oreilly's when I can to get their free diagnostic, probably wont be driving till friday though, I live on campus.
any quick/simple checks a non-mechanic like myself can do in the meanwhile?

There's too many electronic sensors on a car to know where to start without getting the diagnostic code first, once the code is pulled you should be able to hone in on the problem much easier.. I would say just check over all the vacuum lines, if everything looks good/not cracked or leaking, you'd do best just getting the code read

When you go make sure to write down any and all codes pulled then post them back here.
Then we can guide you in the right direction.

two codes Ive been getting alot lately that havent effected the vehicles driveablity (wouldnt notice if they failed without the light) are OBD system readiness check not complete and a faulty O2 sensor, but you wont know for sure till you get the codes.

Readiness code (p1000) will not trip the check engine light, it's stored in the computer until all emissions monitors clear, so inspection stations know if a car has just had the codes reset before coming in for inspection, trying to pass
Could very well be that p1000 won't clear for you as the H02s circuits are one of the systems with a readiness monitor, if that makes sense

good to hear, and dont worry to much. Those cars are very cheap to work on so what ever it is I am sure we can help you fix it... heck a used good mileage engine is about 500 bucks

most common problems on sixers are egr selonoids going out, O2 sensors goin bad, and a default in the pcv system.. ohh and lack of horsepower and torque.. lol
best bet to pinpoint the problem is get the codes checked @ the local parts store..
just let the chorale know and i'm sure either me or somebody on this forum could help you.

I'm taking bets, I want to say it's going to be P0442, any takers?
But yes you can go to Autozone, or Advance Auto or AAMCO and they will tell you the code for free. Having a full description of the code is nice but the code should help just as much. Running the codes through Google will help and sites like OBDII.com or whatever is out there will give a lite breakdown of what's going on. (Meaning, Possible Causes, Possible Solutions).
When you get a hold of the code just post it up here and any other problems or information you have/they give you and we'll certainly help diagnose and fix it
Off Topic - does anyone else sing the AAMCO jingle when they go to spell it? "double aye, em see oh".

Hey guys can u help me I don't remember the exact code but my light came on and I got it scanned. The code was excess vacuum in gas tank... replaced the gas cap and still nothing. I looked at the hoses and dont see anything wrong with any of them. The lady at the Auto Zone told me to look down near the gas tank cant member exactly where cuz it was like 4 weeks ago but everything seemed fine. Any help?
