289 won't start

Hi I have a 1967 mustang coupe with a 289 C code engine. This winter I decided to detail the engine compartment so I pulled the engine out and painted it... But now its back in the car and WON'T START... I cheked timing witch is set 6 deg btdc when I crank it... The gas is comming to the carb and plugs are new. I cheked the compression: 153 psi on all cylinders and the fire is real strong on the plugs firing order is right. When I crank the engine it just backfire to the carb and won't start at all I even had a splash of gas comming out of the carb. Please help me i'm I NEED HELP thanks pascal

if it's backfiring through the carb. You've got dist. 180* out

Thanks Hottcobra just lifted the dist and switched the shaft 180deg and it's strated like a new
