I believe the Saleen is just a GT with a blower and bodykit...
The Cobra is not a GT with a blower, it is a 4V engine, where the GT is a 2V engine..

they make saleen cobras but they are $$$$. If you want a saleen I say get a saleen s351, or any foxbody saleen coupe.

gt hp: 260
non-blown cobra: 320
Im pretty sure thats the correct amount of hp for the cobra just trying to go by memory.
the 05 gt is 3v and it has 300hp so i think 320 is right...

I would go with the 03-04 Cobra... Some of those goes are pushing around 700HP with a Kenne Bell "Blowzilla"... Plus your talking about a 4V engine, cast iron block, forged pistons... Very nice engine... Saleens are nice, got some nice upgrades on them, but like "fast64" said, I would go with a s351 if I was going to put out the money for a Saleen
2004 Saleen s281-E = Horsepoer 445 hp @ 6,000 RPM - Torque 450 ft. @ 4000 RPM
2004 Saleen s281-SC = Horsepower 375 hp @ 5800 RPM - Torque 415ft. @ 3500 RPM
2004 SVT Cobra = Horsepower 390 hp @ 6,000 rpm - Torque 390ft. @ 3,500 rpm
With a few mods, you can the Cobra running some pretty decent power... Mainly a pulley change so you are running a higher PSI. Adding a Kenne Bell Supercharger, chip, exhaust... You will definately feel the power...
Here are some links:

http://www.mycobra.us/ - A guys personal page that is running a Kenne Bell and other mods, pushing 570rwhp and 503 Torque

Definitely go with a cobra. You will lose some of the suspension mods and the body kits that Saleen puts on, but overall I think it is the better deal. You can pick up a lightly used 03/04 cobra for 25-35 k these days. A lot of guys from SVTPerformace.com are selling theirs with blowzillas/KB/Many other mods already. Don't understand why, but, these are also the guys that bought an 03 cash...then traded it on an 04 and again paid cash.
Anyhow...back on topic. If you pick up a new 03/04, with about 2-3k in mods, you will be sitting between 450-500 rwhp depending on the parts and the tunes. So, now you are sitting at about 38k for a coupe with mods...or 42k for a vert with mods. The SC saleen, last I remember was like 65k for the vert or something like that. With the money you save, you can mod the cobra to be on bad mofo.
Now, if you get the chance to pick up an S351...jump on that. I think that is the only car I would think about trading my cobra in on. But, they stopped making them in 99.
Anyhow, go with the cobra.
PS...a cobra will be able to go in the range of 175-178 mph if you get a tune and remove the speed limiter. For 25 mph and a savings of 25k, it would be worth it since you prolly won't get a chance to run 200 mph anyhow.

I drool over both cars, Saleen looks so much more sexier with that body kit, I saw one today when going home from school. Like an 03 Saleen, ash gray color. Middle age guy in there, grinning away as he drove. Wish that was me :-/ But then again I just love Cobras. The intimidation....

The S281-Es set back is that billet flywheel. Not the best for launches.
Honsetly, I'd rather have the Saleen. So much already there that all you have to do is just play with the engine a little bit.

I don't know the details about each model, but if you go to the saleen website posted above it will give you the rundown on each. They used to give you the price too, but I don't see that there anymore.
Basically, the S281 is your entry level car, naturally aspirated. The S281 SC is the next step up with a super charger on it. The S281 E is the top line model with a super charger and some upgrades from the SC. As would be expected, as you move up the model list, the price jumps to the point where I believe the S281E is in the $60k range for the coupe and the vert before options and any dealer markup that might occur.
As far as the S351, those were less HP (395 Block HP) then the current 281E's (425ish Block HP), but they are just super rare. Most years didn't have more than 100 produced I don't think (don't quote me as I am not a saleen expert anymore). They had a supercharged 351 windsor in them.
Anyhow...check out saleen's web site and you will see what the break down is on each model.
(You could always go the S7 route...now that would be nice. lol)
