How far can you push an engine?

a friend asked me how far you can push a 97-98 V6 Mustang engine.
How many miles do you think it can handle before it dies and you gotta start replacing parts?
He's also curious about pontiacs, probably not the place to ask but if anyone knows about pontiac engines your help is appreciated 
His original question was "how much longer would a pontiac engine w/ 160k run?"

there is no set limit for how long you can push an engine. if its properly maintained it can last a long ass time. some cars over time will reveal their flaws, and others wont. some cars you can beat the shit out of and they will want more, and others if you do a simple burnout you will break it(monster garage, bentley transformation lol).
imo i think fords engines are great, i have had 2 fords and nothing wrong with the engines, its the trannies they need to revamp. i always hear bad shit about pontiacs, especially sunfires. i think consumer reports rated the sunfire worst in reliability. does that mean all sunfires are bad, no.

If the engine is properly maintained, it could last a longggggg time. I have seen cars with 300k+ miles on them at the carwash. i dont know about any problems these things have had, but still, thats alot of miles!

hmmm.... our company owns a '94 Ford van with like 298K miles on it... it still runs great... it really depends on how well the vehicle is maintained. Tell your friend to ask for "proof of routine maitenance" |

Well, my 96 stang is fixing to pass 100k miles this week. Runs great, still get 27-28 mpg.
My 99 Pontiac Montana's 3.4L v6 is over 130k miles and running great. Now a trans am of the last 15-20 years will have a chevy motor in it if it's a v8. Dunno if I'd push one of those motors.

my bird has a 3.8 in it, and is around 176 miles on it, only problem was a waterpump, and some heater hoses |

my 89 5.0 takes a beating.. its been driven hard ALL its 178k+ miles, most major things I've done to it are valve stem seals and timing chain.. it's just a matter of time at this point though!  |

my stang is a 98 with 101,000 miles on it, and my P71 is a 02 with 97,000 and both run like a top. great..
