Saturn has just now started putting out some nice cars too. My girlfriends mom has a Sky Redline and it's and awesome car to drive. Oh well it was too little, too late for that brand.

my first car was a saturn. I beat the hell out of that car and it took it like a champ. It sucks that they are killing off the brand.

I'm sure they share some suppliers, which might have issues keeping in business if GM goes down. Thus, also bad for Ford

If their suppliers for little parts go out of business, they're gonna have issues in the immediate future finding a new supplier of the same quality parts. I think they should work on restructuring their suppliers perhaps consolidating them so they have all their suppliers under their control (not GM dependent). I think if they can manage to tie up the lose ends and become more self reliant Ford could actually end out coming out WAY on top from this whole deal.

Sure, Fords market share will increase but so will their costs. Not only will that hurt them, but the continued raping they're getting from the UAW is going to make it harder and harder to keep prices down with the imports.
I really won't be surprised if Ford cuts a brand here soon too. I mean really what the hell is the point of Mercury anyways?
Also, Hummer is being offered around and China and another US company are in talks about it. Saab is possibly going back to Svveeden

Ford has killed most of their extra Brands already. I think they are trying to ditch one more right now but I can't remember which it is.

interesting, I like saturn for what it is but I dont think there is enough room for all of it. It may be a bad thing to do ... but what else can they do (other than manage their company right)

talked to the service manager at Saturn of Baton Rouge today. He told me that Saturn is not going away. it's going back to the way it started out as an independent car maker that makes cheaper small cars and will be a lot more customer based. So it will actually be a goos thing for Saturn

That's unfortunate for Pontiac. Probably means no possibility of a new firebird.
I've always been a closet Trans Am/Ws6 fan.

I highly doubt they would ditch mercury. Since they took the crown vic out of production for the public. That leaves mercury as the cheaper fullsize car. If they got rid of them then all that would be left is the town car and it would be to expensive for most the old folk that want a fullsize.

^this is true. But what is a mountaineer? or a Milan? A ford explorer and a fusion with different badging. I personaly don't think cars like that are necessary. All the companies do it.

I never understood why a company competed against itself. GMC was way to bloated. They had so many cars that competed directly competed with each other. Why?

I do not know. GMC was supposed to be a fleet manufacturer. Then they hopped on the full size truck/suv wagon, and now the Denali is in the luxury suv category. I guess GM knows there are enough people out there who would pay 5-10 grand more for badging and bolt on body parts.

I guess that way no matter who loses you still win!
Seriously though, its not just GM in trouble. I have pretty good information that the local Toyota plant here in H'ville is offering substantial money to its employees to quit (wtf) and that in its current state it would run out of money by next year.

^guessing by that, the overall reduction in car sales and financial situation is starting to affect the import brands such as toyota. Fine by me, I don't care for their new cars. A 90 Camry, different story, not pretty or fast, but the most reliable car on this planet imo based on experience.

Thanks for the article. Heard bits and pieces about Pontiac on the news on Friday. the news story just briefly mentioned pontiac but not anything about Saturn. I'd read that Saturn may go away but didn't know for sure.
i sort of wonder if Ford won't cut out Merc too. Basically they are duplicated Fords now. But back in the day there was a nich for all these different divisions (including GM) when people were brand loyal..and those older big Mercs were more Lincoln like than dressed up Fords...
Except for special customer orders, the marquis for 09, along with the rest of the panthers will be sold only to fleet customers. So I guess old folks will have to buy up used airport rentals with a few miles on them or settle for something different - like a Mustang
