I don't know if anybody remembers Jimmy Beaners thread about the "hidden" features in a 99+ dash, but I finally thought I'd try them out on the way back home from Decatur. It's pretty sweet to have a digital speedo.
Anyways, the reason I made this post was I noticed discrepancies between my gauges and the digital read out. For example, the gauges read 70, and i got 68.2-69mph on the digital. Gauges read 100, digital readout said 98.2-99mph. Anybody know why?
edit: here's the thread. digital MPH???

cause your wheels probably offset the speedo a little bit from your stock ones... plus the analog guages are horribly innaccurate in our cars.

I thought about that too, but I haven't corrected anything for my tire sizes, so why would they read differently?

cause your tires probably have a circumference thats just a few centimeters larger than your stock tires so the speedo will read a little faster than what youre actually going.

because both speedos run out of the output shaft of the transmission. The digital one is going to be more accurate because it can calculate exactly how many rpms the driveshaft is spinning and plug that thru the gear ratio you have. The analog needle does the same thing, but it is less precise. Look at the needle when it is pointing at 70mph or any round number. See where it could be .5mph off either way? The physics of looking at an analog needle and reading the corresponding number incorrectly is called parallax. That is because you cannot get 100% precise w/ a needle. The speed you are going varies (in your mind) from the position of your eyes on the needle. That's why when you're in the passenger seat and you see someone driving, it looks slower then they are actually going. With your head above the needle, if you are off center at all, you will read it at least .5-1.0mph off.
Just some fun biology on how the eyes percieve things. Anyway, the needles are also kinda inaccurate too on the mustangs. Remember, if you push a stock v6 to the limiter, the needle will say around 110-120 when the govorner kicks in at 116mph. That shows the inaccuracy of it.

My needle stopped at 116, didn't even want to go beyond that. Slightly disappointed :P But yeah

yeah, i kinda figured that lookin at it from different angles made a bit of difference there monkey. btw, im a biology major.
It's just the difference wasn't the same as what could be caused by that. I'll just accept that the gauge readout is innaccurate.

Actually, what it's from is that the speedometer is set 2-3 mph slower than you are actually going so you can't blame Ford for a speeding ticket saying it is calibrated wrong. That is why the digital will read 2-3 higher than the analog.

I'd call parallax a physics phenomenon though. Optics fall under the umbrella of physics

actually it's built to err on the side of caution (IE reading high) manufactured that way, so it doesn't read slower than you're going..

Exactly, it reads about 2-3 mph higher than you are actually going.

^ that's what I was thinking, if it was built to err to one side or the other.
