How can I clean my engine?

I really wanna clean out my engine tomorrow morning, but can I use like a normal degreaser? Because I wanna give my ?aluminum?, or whatever the alternator is made out of, you cant just soak it, im gonna clean my engine tomorrow with a tooth brush and like degreaser for kitchen stuff? is that alright? Or do I have to go buy a special degreaser? I wanna go buy simple green but im shit out of $$$. I want my bay to have a nice semi-shiny look to it so when I pop the hood and show people. they can be atleast somewhat impressed on how clean it is instead of tell me how dirty my engine is.

a solution of simple green and water will work good

Cover up the coil-pack and alternator with a plasic bag. Do not get them wet. Do not spray your wires directly or for long periods of time. Simple Green works really good. Let it set maybe ten minutes. That and a pressure washer works wonders.

pressure washer works, but I wouldn't use one personally.. I find simple green, the tough spots agitated a bit with a toothbrush or some... and then a hose (without a nozzle) to rinse works great

Go get a gallon of Grease lightning it is 1/5 the cost of a quart bottle of simple green. Full strength will cut anything. 50% strength will cut brake dust off of rims. you spray simple green and let sit for a few minutes on the engine when you see black start to drip off things hit it with a hose or pressure washer.


Caution do not get full strength on your hands for long because it will start to disolve your skin on your hands but they will be clean

at the car wash i work at we use a pressure washer and some degreaser. just get the engine wet, spray the degreaser on, let it sit, then spray it off.

i alwasy do mine by hand its just better that way i am betting yours is pretty bad... so simple green may do good. I paid a guy 20 bucks to pressure clean my old cars way back in the day and OMG It was perfect... it was unbelivable but... dont know exaclty what that requires and all that, probably not safe.... wrap up any electronics and alternator and what not.
