So I have started using Amazon Cloudfront for some of the images on MustangEvolution (Soon all, Avatars, Signatures and Profile pictures will use it too).
Basically, what it does, is store the images on Amazons data centers all across the world. It gives me stats that break it down by how many requests are given from each server. You might find it surprising to see some of the results.

Out of curiousity, why are we looking to spread our stuff out around the world and not just host it on the local server?

I did it more for the US than around the world. Amazon has data centers across the United States and for every request to the site it picks the closest location to that person to pull the file from. |

Yes. For instance, Amazon has datacenters in each major region of the United States. This means that if you are in the northeast it pulls the image from the northeast datacenter
Our server is hosted in Atlanta. Meaning that no matter where you were in the US or world, the images always were pulled from Atlanta. This isn't ideal for someone living in Boston or Los Angles. |

i think its a cloud computing concept. basically, you decentralize the storage/computing power to a third party where it distributes the content on their "cloud."
i think.
