Mustang GT
Ford introduced the Ford Mustang GT in 1965 starting a trend in the United States that would see other car manufactures pick up the use of the “GT” for some of their models. The Mustang GT still exists today and continues to be Ford’s biggest seller among the Mustang line and the company as a whole. The Mustang GT is usually the mid range Mustang, between the V6 Mustang and a Cobra model (now the Shelby GT500). The only exception is when the Bullitt and Mach 1 Mustangs were made in limited production.
The GT was dropped from the Mustang name in the early and mid 70’s but returned in the late 1970’s and has remained attached to a Mustang ever since. Our guess is they didn’t feel the Mustang II was worthy of the GT name. Sorry Mustang II fans.
