Steve Saleen, born April 2, 1949 in Inglewood, California, his racing career with his father’s 1956 Porsche Type 356 European Model. A graduate of the University of South Calfornia, Steve found an appreciation for performance cars and skills for succeeding on the race track.
In the late 70’s, Steve raced in the Formula Atlantic Series and by the 80’s had reached SCCA Trans-Am Series status.
In 1983, Steve started Saleen autosports and took on big projects such as the Ford Mustang. In 1984, the first Saleen Mustang was born and with re-designed aerodynamics, a fully functional cockpit, and improved suspension and steering. This new ‘Stang ran with the best of them bringing a nice win at the 24-hour race in Mosport, Canada.
In 1991, the Saleen S351 Mustang was reborn and provided an amazing 495 horses making it the fastest production vehicle during that time. In 1996, the S281 was born.
In 1995, Steve teamed up with movie/tv star Tim Allen and racing legend Bob Bondurant to form the Saleen/Allen “RRR” Speedlab team where they campaigned Saleen Mustangs competing in the SCCA Championship. that next year, Steve Saleen made it into the Mustang Hall of Fame along with Carroll Shelby. He clutched the SCCA Championship three times.
In 2000, Steve released his first supercar, the Saleen S7. This would be the fastest production vehicle yet. Billy Tally and designer, Phil Frank, helped Saleen create this monster supercar, and also had a track version that was a huge success known as the S7R.
Saleen teamed up with the racing legend, Parnelli Jones, to create the Saleen / Parnelli Mustang that came with a BOSS 302 and an awesome 370 horses.
In August 2006, Saleen opened up his own store in Irvine, California, called “The Saleen Store” that is managed by his daughter, Molly. This store received numerous awards and had tremendous growth.
In May 2007, Steve decided to leave Saleen Inc, and pursue his interest in SMS Supercars, producing performance vehicles along with parts and accessories.
