Ford Mustangs Sales Down 32.2% In 2008

In not so surprising news, Ford Mustang sales for the year were down 32.2% from 2007 as the shaky auto industry and declining economy forced many people to rethink major purchases. In total 91,251 Mustangs were sold last year. December was also a bad month for Ford Mustang sales compared to November with sales dropping 51.6%.

The good news however is that the newly redesigned 2010 Ford Mustang will more than likely breath new life into Mustang sales when it hits dealerships around May. Expect a decent turn around in 2009 as Ford starts gaining more market share away from GMC and Chrysler, who’s future is much more shaky than Ford’s.

It makes no sense why Ford would limit 2009 Mustang production to around 45,000 units. Historically (all the way back to at least 1972), Ford has sold more Mustangs in the last year of production for a model than the year prior, even when the public knew a new model was being released.
More Mustangs were sold in 1973 than in 1972, even though it was known a new model was going to be relesed in 1974.
More were sold in 1978 than 1977.
More were sold in 1986 than 1985.
More were sold in 1993 than 1992.
More were sold in 1998 than 1997.
More were sold in 2004 than 2003.
