Grabber Blue Boss 302… Not So Much

Many enthusiasts are in love with the new Boss 302 Ford will be producing. I feel the group that engineered, developed, and tested this car did a fantastic job all around. They worked hard so that the vehicle wouldn’t just be a name on a normal everyday Mustang. The results of what they came up with are extremely nice and I am sure they had to fight Ford for all of the performance gains they achieved, especially for the price point they are starting at (if Dealerships will leave that alone… which I doubt). Out of all the great things Ford did I feel one very obvious thing was over looked, color choices.

Ford is not offering a Grabber Blue color for 2011 or 2012. If you take a look back at 1969 there was no Grabber Blue color option, it didn’t get added until 1970. Some might be thinking Ford is wanting to repeat such a thing by holding off on the Grabber Blue color option for the Boss 302 until next year. That would be something to consider if 2012 was going to bring a Grabber Blue color option for the Boss 302, but its not. Why did Ford drop the ball on a combination that would be truly amazing? No one seems to fully know why Ford did something so odd, or why they are limiting the Boss 302 to only a few colors. I have wondered if they had a color panel determine what would work best without ever considering the heritage or the throwback a Grabber Blue Boss 302 would have. Regardless of what we think Ford doesn’t deem it a good idea to create an amazing combination of Boss 302 and Grabber Blue… so we must wait. It seems 2013 might carry this color combination, but I feel by then it will have lost some of its hype. As always automakers just cant get everything right all the time.

Some may view this as Ford punishing early Boss 302 owners by not allowing them to purchase the vehicle how it was meant to be. I feel some of the Boss’s essence has been lost in the channels of the Ford Motor Company. How can something so important and so iconic miss the mark and not be seen as foolish when it comes to color choices? I feel a measurable amount of excitement about the upcoming Boss’s return has been lost in translation from the drawing board to driving it off the lot. Ford is usually so good at recognizing what a true enthusiast wants and they did such a great job in the design of this vehicle. Its sad to see something so great cut down so much by such a simple and painfully obvious mistake. One thing is for sure, we will be able to pick out the many fake Boss 302′s driving around as I am sure many owners will choose to make their own version of the Boss with a nice Grabber Blue paint job to top it off. If thats not enough you could always try to purchase the one special edition Boss 302 that was built for Barret Jackson in Grabber Blue… that is if you have 450k laying around.

While grabber blue is historically traditional, I’m not so sure it has translated into a particularly desirable color choice for the 21st century – at least to the general public. I don’t have figures, but judging from the 2010 models in grabber blue I saw sitting for ages on dealer lots here in MN, Ford might have made the decision not to offer it out of the chute for the Boss not fully thinking through the market segment of buyers who would actually purchase the Boss 302 reissue. The point about grabber blue not originally being an option until 1970 models may be significant as well and Ford actually did have a method to their madness….

Notice the colors that are offered for the new 2012 Boss 302. With the exception of red on the regular and black and silver on the Laguna Seca editions, the colors are the same (although different hues) as the original 1969 Boss 302. They were / are Orange, Dark Blue, White and Yellow. The Pearl Yellow shade is really the only color that is almost not true to the original. I feel red was added because any “hot” car needs to be offered in Red. But, it could also be that Red was the original color on Parnelli Jones Trans Am 1969 Boss. True, the sides of the roof were black, but the top was white and the body was red.

Also, The white Boss Stripes could also be a throw-back to the original 1969 Trans Am race car Bosses. Both Parnelli Jones and the Blue Shelby Team cars had white stripes.

Now, I’ll agree, I also wish Grabber Blue was offered, because it is quite nice. But who knows, maybe the 2013 will come in more flavors!

Another thing worth thinking about. On the Laguna Seca editions. It was not until 1970 (the second year of original Boss production), that Parnelli won at Laguna. That was in a Grabber Orange Boss. Wouldn’t it be sweet if the 2013 Laguna model was offered in Grabber Orange?
And, wouldn’t be even sweeter if the Laguna was called the Parnelli?

There are several other things that get on my nerves, mainly the grill and the different rear spoiler. In my opinion, the Laguna spoiler should be on both models. I mean after all, it’s nothing but the same spoiler that is offered on the Mustang CS, so what’s the big deal. If anything the Laguna spoiler should even be more radical. I also wish the standard mag wheels were brushed aluminum instead of black. They would then look identical to the mini lites that the original Trans Am Bosses ran with.

All in all, I’m glad the Boss is back, I’ve missed it for a long time. I just wish I could afford one, and I wish the dealers wouldn’t get greedy, but that won’t happen.

Excellent feedback. Overall I feel as if they just completely overlooked Grabber Blue for this car. It is to perfect of a fit.

The color schemes and stripes on the Boss are not that desirable for such a great car.  The black wheels degrade the car immensely. The car is just not a head turner like the Shelby. Sorry Larry Shinoda did not live to help Ford out with the graphics. The grabber blues are sitting on dealer lots unsold, the color reminds me of the old Grabber Blue Maverick that people made fun of in that era. Ford, Please drop the Grabber Blue color!
