Has The Boss 302 Trac Key Killed Ford Mustang GT Ghost Cam Tunes?

If you don’t know what a “Ghost Cam” is, it is a tune that gives your 2011 Mustang GT the aggressive sound of an aftermarket cam. You can find many videos of cars with the tune on YouTube. It offers no actual performance benefits but makes your car sound really awesome at idle. The tune was discovered and created by Jon Lund and up until a few days ago was offered by a host of aftermarket tuning companies.

Users on various Mustang forums started noticing the disappearance of these tunes from tuning companies websites and started asking questions. A user on S197Forum.com stated that after he talked with a representative of LethalPerformance.com, who had offered the Ghost Cam tune, he was told that “there are some Legal issues with Ford and the ghost cams, so they are no longer currently available.”

Further more, someone claiming to be Jon Lund on SVTPerformance commented that he stopped making the Ghost tunes because Ford was going to patent the technology, even though that he claims his tune is done differently than the Boss Trac Key. He also stated that he chose to respect their request and stopped selling it. We have not been able to verify if it is in fact him, however, a follow up post by a LethalPerformance.com vendor seems to grant credibility to the user’s statements. I could find no current trace of an applied or issued patent regarding the Trac Key in my quick search.

There have also been a few mentions that Ford Racing could possibly be putting together a package for the Mustang GT to sell to owners that will behave much the same way as the 2012 Boss 302 does with the Trac Key.

I have sent emails to Ford representatives and the various vendors that have pulled the Ghost Cam tunes from their website and are awaiting their responses. I will update this page as I get further information.

Thanks to user DDTCM over on our forums for the tip. If you would like to provide any information regarding this story, please email tips@mustangevolution.com.

Update: I just received a comment from Sean Jakober over at SCT:

As far as I know we have not been contacted by ford. Then again we are not developing ghost cams either, the custom tunes are made by our custom tuning dealers.

Update 2: Chris Rose from AmericanMuscle.com just replied giving a lot of good info on our forum.
