J Mays: I’m Not About To Screw Up The Next Mustang Design

J Mays, Ford’s global design chief as well as the guy in charge of designing the 2014 Mustang, was commenting on the recent transition of the Volkswagen Beetle to it’s latest design when he dropped a few remarks about the next generation Ford Mustang and how important it is to not transition drastically away from the look and feel of the Mustang that we have come to know.

“It is weighing pretty heavy on my shoulders, and I’m not about to screw that up,” he says.

The “tricky balancing act” of trying to update a classic requires taking a step back to keep the car’s heritage in perspective and the stomach to understand that a lot of the proposals for changes will end up being thrown away in order to please particular, but loyal, fans. “They are buying into a club,” he says about owners of cars that are part of a unique slice of history.

    Are they gonna fix the tail lights or are they still going to look like they stole them from a Hundai…?

      I wasnt aware hyundai was around in the 60s…..the 3 bar taillight design on the ’10-’12 model years is just a slanted variation of something the Mustang has had since its inception. If anything, will hyundai stop ripping off Ford’s engine displacements? 4.6l and 5.0l V8 engines in the Genesis? but then again…they did make an open announcement that they are literally copying Ford.

        I just meant that they look more like they belong on an import than on an american muscle car. Its a travesty in my opinion, and not just my opinion. Take a poll….I’m sure you’ll find that people who detest the new tailights out number the few who don’t by a huge majority.

  • Mustang Design = GREAT.

    PEOPLE NEED TO STOP BITCHING ABOUT THE NEW READ ENDS/HEADLIGHTS. THEY LOOK A HELLUVA LOT BETTER THAN THE FLAT PLAIN REAR END THAT PLAGUED THE ” OLD-GEN ” MUSTANG FROM 2005 – 2009.

    IF THEY KEPT THE SAME ( S A M E ) REAR END AND PUT IT ON THE NEW 2010+ MODELS, YOU PEOPLE WOULD STILL BE BITCHING SAYING ” OHH IT’S THE SAME. WHY DIDNT YOU GUYS CHANGE IT? BLAH BLAH WAHH WAHH WAHH”.

    IT IS EVIDENT THAT YOU DONT KNOW SQUAT ABOUT TRUE DESIGN!

    THE 2010+ REAR ENDS ARE BEAUTIFUL, AERODYNAMIC, AND VERY WELL DESIGNED.

    IF YOU CANT SEE THE TRUE BEAUTY OF A MUSTANG THROUGH IT’S “FAULTS”, THEN YOU SHOULDN’T EVEN BE ALLOWED TO EVEN LOOK AT ONE.

    lol the new mustang lights are nice ? the only people that like them are the people that own the new ones. I’m about to buy a 08 gt500 because I CANNOT stand the newer rear lights. the prior rear end was wayyyyy more accurate to the previous 60′s look. the front end of 05-09 are pretty much a remake of the old ones. the fog lights and full round lights are late 60′s period. the new ones look real mean but not retroactive by any means
