I have to replace the top on the car and the guy that I got the car from had a brand new top still in the box. He gave it to me just wondering should I install it or should I get a pro to do it. Has anyone done it and how hard is it. Thanks
i have done it. it is pretty hard. but with some patience, anyone can do it. my local shop quoted me 800$ just for labor. so i went for it. i think if you can get it don at a shop for a reasonable price i would let them do it. i just dont see it worth 800$.
if you are gonna do it i recommend an air stapler. i picked one up at menards for 25$ and it came with all the different size staples i needed.
i also recommend buying the 20$ how to dvd that late model restoration sells.mand i would also watch it through 2 times before doing it so you understand well. after i watched it it, i set up a tv in the garage and used it for reference as i installed.
I talked to the local place today and the labor starts at 400 and goes up from there. So I think I am going to try it myself. Some one said I should join a local Mustang club and see if they could help with installing the top. Does anyone know of any clubs in the syracuse NY area? thanks
no matter if someone helps you or not, buy the dvd. they install the whole top in the video with step by step instructions. i would even by it first to help you decide you want to do it for sure.
Do you have a link to the DVD that you have suggested? I agree I will watch the DVD and keep reserching this as this would be a good project while the car is in the grage for the winter. Thanks
No problem. The video is kinda low budget. But it is essential for a diy'rr to install a top. The one paragraph instructions that come with a top don't give you even 5% of the info you need. :good:
ill tryt to look for it, one of the guys in the other forums did the step-by-step not to long ago, it was really good, just throwing it out here, but i know the dvd would be a lot better, just trying to save you sum $$$

i understand. but this job is pretty advanced. so i wouldnt skimp. i would read online and watch the video. most normal restoration shops wont even do it.
I have ordered the dvd and I have not found any step by step instructions on the net for the top. So now I am working on the top's hydrylic hoses and the motor now. Is it common there is very little how to on the net for convertible's I have not retored a car in 25 years and things are real different now I am having trouble finding a chilton shop manual. Thanks
There is a good how to on the whole top mechanism somewhere. I am work now, but I will see if I can find it later. Trojan horse posted it about a month or two ago on here. Maybe you can search the forums and find the link in a thread.
