It was rumored a few weeks ago that Ford wanted the Mustang in NASCAR’s 2013 Sprint Cup series and now it appears that is where they are headed. The Associated Press is reporting the Ford has officially requested NASCAR approve the Ford Mustang for the 2013 Sprint Cup series, NASCAR’s highest level of racing.

The director of Ford’s North American Motorsports program tells The Associated Press that fan reaction to the Mustang exceeded all expectations. This is not surprising, as many have long dreamed of going back to the days where sports cars were actually used in NASCAR, instead of family sedans. Jamie Allison also says Ford wants to bring the iconic Mustang to NASCAR’s top series to have its entry consistent with a model fans can buy in the showroom.
