How did you go about cleaning them, soapy water then air dry? Also I've been using breathers for the past year since I started running nitrous but didn't know the check valve needed to be removed. What are the consequences of not removing the check valve and how do you remove it?

I have a 2014 GT. I put the breathers on and have been very satisfied. But one thing I do not understand . Everyone mentions removing the checkball on the Pass. side. I took the tube out and whether I draw or blow air there is no restriction at all??? So I didn't bother with removing it. Simply installed the breathers. Am I missing something?
