Or 2000 gt convertible has started to die after it starts. The sound is kinda like a small backfire but in the engine area. If it had carbs I would say a backfire in the carbs. Also the check engine light came on.

We tried putting the computer reader on but it just hangs up at the protocol screen (I put it on another car to make sure it was ok & it was). We cleaned battery and cleared check engine light. After 5+ starts it has not come back on. But 3 out of those 5 starts it died. No change in performance or anything.

Car runs fine otherwise. Had it smogged and passed a month ago.

Any ideas?

Go to Autozone, O'Reilly Auto, Nationwise, Pep Boys or the like and see if you can get the fault codes. Without the codes, it's hard to know where to start. You don't want to spend any money on something that will not fix your prob.

Could be the distributor my buddy had the same problem with his 95 GT. He would start it up let it run and in about 2 or 3 minutes it would be dead. Hope that helps!!!

These cars don't have distributors like the push rod 5.0, they have individual coil packs.

Check iac. Idle air control module on throttle body. Looks like c cell battery with one wire plug on it and two bolts

This same issue happened to me in the winter a couple years ago and it turned out to be a bad Idle Air Control valve.

Easiest cheapest thing is to check the iac and clean it with some carb cleaner. I've had the same problem. It would throw codes that were fuel related, but it would always be the iac.
