I own a 1965 Mustang with a 289, V8. I need to know the correct number of teeth on the flywheel I need. I currently have a 157 tooth, ad for some reason, when the engine is turned over, there is a loud ticking sound, in or out of gear. (The car des NOT RUN, it isn't even hooked up to a battery, nor will it be, due to the current problem.) So, what is the correct diameter flywheel, and # of teeth.
1965 Mustang.
289 V8
4 speed MANUAL transmission.

is the flywheel 167 tooth, 10" diameter, or 157 tooth, 10 1/2"?

What Angel is talking about is the ring gear that goes on the outside of the flywheel for a manual transmission.
The original flywheel should be the 157 tooth.
The 164 tooth is for the 302 starting in 1968.
