I am trying to figure out what gears are in the rear end. Does anyone know what these came stock with? It was originally a 289 with a 2 barrell. It is now a 351W witha T-5 and I am wondering how to tell what is in there already so I do not replace it with the same gears. This is my daily driver but I want to make it a little beefier. I was thinkg 373 for the gears.

Check you data plate for the answer on what gears you have. As for what to go with. I just swapped 3rd members out of my 66 Fastback form 2.80 open diff to a 3.25 Trak-Loc and what a world of difference. Gets off the line quicker and still stays low in the rpm range like the 2.80s did. Its the perfect daily driver ratio.

it should have 3.00, check the dataplate on the door..top line, next to last number should be a 1 for the 3.00, or 6 for a 2.80, letters A or F would be for Equa-Lock..

these combinations with a T5 would give it a real tall gearing, like

with the 3.00 at 2000rpm and a .75 od T5 and 25 inch tire gives 66 mph

Yeah, most likely 2.80 or 3.00 if it's stock.

btw, thinking 3.73 maybe a little too much for a daily. First gear will be wasted for the streets. A 3.55 maybe better.

There should be a metal tag on the third member telling you the gear ratio.
