an old 1976 mustang, wont start. it started about 6 months ago.

what we know is that when we turn the motor over, there is no spark until AFTER the motor is almost done turning over (when you stop trying to start it/let go of the ignition) it will spark at that time ONCE, and try to start (with what sounds like a backfiring noise, as one cylinder goes off) but die.
We are going to check the coil wires, the main (to distributor) wire (I don't know what its called), and the coil.

Any other suggestions suggestions?

hi. Your on the right track. So turn the key to on then cross the solenoid and if it fires better it is the coil. (primary winding). If no real change then it can be the carb. Put a Tablespoon of gas in the carb. I that doesn't do it then its distributor. Nice car!
