Hey guys and gals!

Tomorrow night I am beginning tear-down on my 2001 cobra. Car runs great, but I have bad valve stem seals.... giving me an excuse to convince my wife to let me spend money on a full rebuild.... YES!

I am going to be installing the following.

-Heads are being ported and polished (~stage 2) by a local shop
-new valve seals
-Ford GT Supercar cams
-high performance springs
-Billet cam spacer
-new lifters
-90mm Lightning MAF
-36# injectors
-Tubular K member
-Longtubes and o/r H pipe
-Full-tilt-boogie (5000) bushing kit

Then a Dyno tune to top it off...

Car has a brand new short block, with a terminator crank, as of January 2012... but the guy before me re-installed the heads with bad valve seals...

Does anyone have any suggestions or GOOD advice?

This is going to be my first build with a OHC setup... so it's pretty new to me, but I'm having help from my Father-in-law who has some knowledge of these heads... so we'll be fine as long as we take our time.

I'm going to keep the car N/A for now... so don't tell me to add a blower...

Really? There aren't any Do-it-yourselfers in the Mustang world?

Could be because its in the SVT section. I'll move the thread to the 96 - 04 section and see if she gets some lookers. :good:

are you going to have the local shop install all the valvetrain or are you going to do it? if they arent i would see how much they charge to assemble. I only say that because it is so tedious and irritating installing the springs. i always found it better to just pay someone to do it haha

Aww, SVT, no problem. Wondering though, why 36 lb injectors? Also, are u upgrading the fuel system?

I'm doing all the work myself. Just wanting advice for installing timing chain with 4 cams... so GT guys with only 2 cams can't really answer this question. That's why I posted to the SVT section...

Because my 24# injectors are maxed out with just bolt-ons and a racing tune... so I will definitely need new injectors after full heads/cams/exhaust work. 24# injectors are only suppose to be good for about 320-340 bhp... that's the factory horsepower for this car... May be getting a pair of factory terminator injectors, that will do the trick. Fuel system won't need replaced unless I throw boost on it... You can always tune bigger injectors to act smaller... but not the other way around.

The guy who is porting my heads is also installing the lifters, springs, and valve seals... all included in his price that he quoted me, so I'm definitely gonna let him do it... Thanks!

Would anyone happen to know if there is any real performance gain from having valve work done with larger valves put in? The guy that's going to work on my heads was asking if I had ordered any larger valves or if I just wanted him to clean up my stock valves... Thanks!

I did some research and called MMR (since I'm ordering most of my parts from them anyways)

Going with .5 mm-Over valves... the tech at MMR said you can't go wrong with that. Not a huge performance gain, but will give me a higher quality valve and open the door for more power adders later. More research showed that any larger than that can lead to the valves being too heavy, causing them not to open and close properly...

Finally got the heads off. Kind of a pain to get them off, but went fairly smoothly. Discovered that my vlaves weren't closing completely, AND that the previous owner re-installed a bad head gasket on the passenger side when he installed the heads on the new shortblock...

Now, I'm going with the Comp Cams 106500 instead of the supercar cams because the supercar cams are on a 4 month waiting list... and their not worth waiting that long...

Also.. I know Underdrive Pulleys seem like something that's OK to go with the cheaper brand to save some $... but a word of warning, I was leaking some oil at the from of my motor, and when I pulled the crank pulley off, it had a large groove in it. Just a poor quality pulley that wore out. So just a heads up before any of you go buying the SR Performance pulley. I'm going to get Steeda now so this doesn't happen again.

My signature pretty much explains what both cars have... But the chevelle is getting a new cam and heads this winter too... But it's not really ever gonna be a speed demon...

I'd say that list looks pretty good on parts, however the single most important thing i would make sure it absolutely right is the heads, make sure you put enuff spring pressure but not over the top, something durable...a good valve job from a reputible company.
just having your valves close all the way, and that head gasket is going to make a huge difference on power.
did you do a compression test on each cylinder before tearing it down?

Remember to MATCH all of the components from the tb, intake, heads, valves, springs, cams, every component, headers, x or h pipe, mufflers, and even the size of the tail pipe, gear ratio, and depending on what you are wanting this car to do...tires...
if you build a HUGE amount of power and have crappy tires on there (especially with 4:10 gears) your wasteing ur money imho.

Already ahead of you...

It's a brand new short block... Heads are being machined/assembled by a professional. I already have every bolt-on you can do... Nitto 555R's... Just need to to the ftbr5000 bushing kit, and get a good dyno tune... (Looks like Kurgan may do it)... And this thing should be pretty nasty for a N/A Cobra.

throw up a dyno jpg when you get it done. I always like to see those :)
