Hi all,

My 2011 GT has started doing this thing where when the Air Conditioning is on, the radiator cooling fan switches on for maybe 2-5 seconds, then switches off for a short time, maybe 10-20 seconds, then repeats.

The thing that made me notice this, is whenever the fan kicks on, it bogs the engine down to the point that the cars electrical system gets pulled down to maybe 10 or 11 volts, which is enough to automatically wind the Windows down if the bog-down happens while you're in the process of winding one up. I guess this is a safety feature in case you get something jammed in the window, which would also pull the voltage down.

I thought it might be my battery not being able to hold up the voltage, so I replaced it. It didn't change a thing.

Anyone else seen this issue?
Any ideas on how to fix it?

EDIT: I just tested it with the AC off, and the fan cycle is much more normal, but it still bogs down the engine when it kicks in.

I've looked at the fan to see if it shows any signs of fouling or if it appears to stop quickly after it switches off, possibly indicating a problem with its bearing, but it's free and looks great.

Yeah I guess that's a possibility! Hopefully it's not a pain to change. Looks like I can replace the fan for around $150.

Some one suggested that the throttle body needs cleaning, but I didn't buy that.
It probably does though. And new plugs. I'm a little over 60,000 miles.

Holy crap I was coming on the forum tonight to ask this question. I'm having the same exact issue now that it's getting hot out again.

I am running a boost a pump and thought maybe the electrical was getting funky with that...are you running one too by chance? I don't remember this ever happening before I boosted my car, so not sure if it's related. It's actually bogged down so bad for me a few times, it's actually shut my car off (sitting in drive while stopped).

At least for me, it doesn't seem to matter if the A/C is on or not.

Wow! Well I'm glad I'm not alone!
I'm not running anything aftermarket except a Bama tune. I suspected that at first, so I did a number of idle relearns, tried different tunes, and also returned to stock. None of that made any difference.

I guess we have two issues (well, I do).

1) The idle bog-down issue when the cooling fan kicks in.

2) The cooling fan kicking in regularly, and for short periods when AC is on. Might not even be an issue, just brought to my attention because of the bogging down.

I haven't stalled yet because of it, but I wouldn't be surprised if it happened. It sounds like it's getting pretty close!

You could amp the fan motor see if it's over amping.

Good idea. Although I don't have a good enough meter for that.
I'm surprised it's not blowing the fuse the way it's obviously pulling a load of current...

Well it will eventually blow the fuse if it is the fan going bad. Although I once saw a fan go bad and the wires actually caught fire and the fuse didn't blow in a Subaru.

What causes the fan motor to go bad?
I considered the fact that it might be a bearing or something seizing up on the fan, so I pushed it around manually, and it's free and there's no resistance to the rotation. Weird.

First of all we don't that's the problem yet. But fan motors are Mass produced cheap motors sometimes you get a bad one or something can cause it.

My base 11 GT does the same damn thing. I looked into it a while back and came up the same answer. That was a year ago............ Does it if my ac is off or not.

Pretty much stock besides a catch can. When it does I am replacing the radiator with a Boss model along with fan(s).

bogging down when the ac compressor kicks in is "normal" fuses for motors are normally designed to allow brief periods of over current as motors take a good bit of power to get started compared to what they draw when running

also when testing with ac on/off make sure air flow is NOT to windshield as that will automatically cycle ac to aid in defrosting windshield

2011 v6 here with 25kmiles, so this bog-down issue is normal I guess? What about the blower fan cycling on and off? Mine does it on and off every 10-15sec and I do not recall this happening in the past and 2 other people one with a 2011 and another with a 2012 both told me their fans do NOT cycle and if the AC is on in their cars the front engine blower fan stays on (as long as the car is warmed up if its cold the fan wont be on)

Glad you didn't fall for that one, it's obviously an under inflated left-front tire due to a defective gonkulator. :rolleyes:

This seems to be a common problem. The cooling fan has 2 speeds and when the fan speed resistor burns out you only have high speed. If your fan does not turn on and stay on when the AC is on. That is your problem. High speed only comes on when there is extreme pressure in the AC lines (causing the bogging effect and cycling) or you are overheating badly. The fix is to replace the fan speed resistor. See this post.
