It's fixable, but like kstangs said its a tranny rebuild
i remember when my GT started doing that...get ready for a rebuild. i'd do it before you take anything else with you
I paid about $250 on parts and $100 on labor i know the guy so he charged me real cheap till now works great getting my TOB replaced and get my clutch monday ordered my parts at AM ford racing TOB and pilot bearing so his going to drop the trans again labor is cheap though others would charge between $450-$500 in my area just labor wise
Anyone. Recommends anyone in central Florida for the job? I will not ever go to power by ford ever so that one is out the list.
You may want to try changing the transmission fluid and loading only 3.0 L (3.2 qts) of fluid--I recommend Mobil 1 ATF.

There is a TSB describing the problem (TSB-04-26-13), which is that the factory and owner's manual recommendation of using 3.8 L (4.0 qts) is too much.

This caused windage problems, with the excess lube causing the gears to over-synchronize because the excess oil makes the fluid overheat and foam. This and affects the turning ratios of the gear train; similar to your trying to run on the beach in 2 feet of water. The increased resistance to turning slows the gears prematurely and alters the synchronizer timing, causing shift problems. The oil level was reduced to 3 liters and the problem was resolved.

Reducing the fluid level, and using the M1 ATF, can help or even correct the problem if no severe damage has been done...
Excellent bit of info, as usual, Cliffy.
Awesome information, thanks a bunch. I am going to try that first to see i will update later
Id swap a qrt of fluid for a qrt of syncromesh..it did help when i had that issue. But he is right 3.25 qrts is the correct amount.
Could be clutch. My friend had same problem and we thought it was synchrob but it was the clutch... Does it seems easy to push down, like no pressures to it?
If the revs are over 3k it wont go in and make vibration with grinding sound. If revs are under 3k is normal like nothing is wrong, i like shifting higher than 3k even when cruising it just sounds better and feels right

That is exactly the issue addressed in the TSB. There is a similar TSB (TSB 04-15-6) for the 2001 through 2003 model years...
Yes thats exactly it. Nice thanks a bunch

Im pretty sure its clutch, thats the same thing with my friends civic except it was 3rd gear and he had to drive slow .

To see what happens.
Is Mobile 1 ATF and MERCON the same type fluid?
Yep. They'll both work.
They meet the same basic specification, however they do not perform the same--use the M1, you will not regret it...
