I think that you are doing the smart thing by completely disassembling a 50 year old engine and inspecting everything.

Definitely check the serial numbers on the block. You never know, that might be a 428.
If the car was equipped with a 390, the engine code will be a "Z". If it was equipped with a 428 the engine code will be "Q".

It's hard to make any sense of those without knowing their locations.
It doesn't matter though. Apparently, you can only determine the engine size of some of the high performance engines by the serial numbers... My 428 SCJ being one.
Here are some of the performance engine serial numbers.
You will probably end up having to measure the stroke to determine the engine displacement.

After giving up on that I washed down the engine bay a little. Coming out pretty clean with just a hose. Need to get a pressure washer to do the rest. ImageUploadedByMustang Evolution1435373957.098514.jpg

Cut out the rusted battery tray and made a patch panel. Started welding it in but looks like I didn't cut enough out so the metal just kept buring back. Need to make a few more little patches to fix that other wise I'm pretty happy with it. Did a bit more work today. It was hit at some point in the driver front and was poorly repaired. So I beat it all back good enough for now. Just need to get a new fender, some one thought it would be a good idea to remove all the paint and then park it out side.
