Ok, started getting some pinging during some 100*+ days over the summer, so I started eliminating suspect mods/changes.

First I removed the SCT 4 bank. Problem persists. Next I replaced plugs(auto lite 25's) replaced the cap and button(MSD), wires(auto lite) and the coil(oem).

Using Exxon 93 gas. Have factory timing marks a dist aligned. Problem still persists.

So today I unhooked the battery and spout for about 15 mins, then reconnected the batt, let the car run for about 10 mins then plugged the spout in and let it run another 10. Took it down the road and seemed ok. Stopped at a friends for a few and when I left I turned the AC on a stomped the gas and BAM the damn pinging is back.. What am I over looking?

I have a timing light but have not taken the time to mark the balancer and pointer, figured I shouldn't need to being it never did this before with the marks lined up..

Ideas? Questions? Comments?

If you have detonation problems the absolute last thing you wanna be doing is romping on the throttle. I'd park it until you get it completely worked out. if you have to drive it, drive it very, very easy. I don't mess around with detonation problems, that'll destroy a motor quicker than anything.

I understand all that but it's my DD and if I park it it'll be because its blown.

And that's the only time it does it.

did you remove and reinstall the spout with the car running? i dont know if you can do it running but i read your suppose to shut the car off when plugging and unplugging the spout. to verify if it messed up anything you can just recheck the timing.

I tried retarding it, no pinging but sputtered and back fired. Advanced it back to just inside at the mark doing the spout as you said with the car off. Will try it in a few on my way to work. If it pings ill just pull the spout.

I would also suggest checking fuel pressure.

I'm sure someone else will have some good ideas to.

Pulling the spout out will be a good idea till you get it figured out. :good:
It's weird. Almost like the chip is still in.. The shifting is still fairly stiff..

Maybe your ecu has one Hell of a memory! :D
That's why I unhooked the battery.. Shifting seems more normal now. I hope I have not altered it permanently lol

Take it to a speed shop and have them hook it up to the computer , if that's your DD don't mess around to much with it, may cost a couple $$$

Put a timing light on it and back the timing off 2 degrees.Always pull and replace the spout with the engine off.
It may take some time (10-20) miles for the ECU to learn its new parameters.

Seemed to be better on the way in to work, although I did not turn the AC on.

Hopefully in the AM I can put the light on it to be certain.

Seems pulling and replacing the spout with the engine off was my issue, actually replacing it with the engine off as I was doing it running
Thanks for the help guys! :good:
