I have a '96 Lincoln Town Car with the 4.6 SOHC V8. I believe that this engine is the same one in the '96 Mustang with the SOHC 4.6 V8. If that is true, would that mean that I could put after market engine performance parts on my 4.6 to make it more powerful?

That's correct most parts for mustangs are interchangeable with the vic and town car as long as there is no clearance issue.My friend has one deep into the 11'S.As for performance parts you can go almost anywhere for 4.6 performance try Jegs,Summit,EBay,BBK.com.
