You would know if you got sideways... When your turn hard and hear squealing that means your pushing your tires to their potential. Any more and you probably would have gotten sideways.
My parents like it when I go to the track, because then they know I'm keeping it off the street. +1 the fastest car I've driven is out corvette. And that only has an LS1 (350hp; 390tq)... As Static stated, it's racing around cones in a big open area, no possible way to hurt yourself or wreck. After only 3 runs at autocross I learned more about how my car handles than most people will in their life. It was one of the greatest experiences of my life so far.What is autocross?
