Borla ATAK is underwhelming to me

Hi guys,
My Mustang has JBA shorty headers and a procharger. I installed the Borla ATAK cat back exhaust and I am not impressed with it. It supposedly has the loudest rating, not I'm not that impressed with it. A lot of people on American Muscle say use high flow cats with an xpipe. There are some out there that will pass emissions, but they are 600 apiece, so with 2 of those, labor, and a tune, I'd be looking at another 2k+ to try and get a better sound. This would pass emissions and not throw check engine lights. But, I don't know if I wanna go down that route.
Has anyone else done the borla atak cat back on their v6 mustang? Do you think it was worth it?

I feel that any Mod you do to any vehicle should be done for you. They mostly don't add any value to another buyer. With that said I have the Borla attack mine and they sound alright to me. It is a V6 you will to get the thump out of them like a V8.

They don't have a drone that I have heard yet. When I get on it they sound pretty good to me. So the question is back to you, do you have 2K burning a hole in your pocket to do this Mod?

Hi MIarv5, No, I don't have 2k burning a hole in my pocket. I do still have my Roush axle backs, which sounded louder, but had a drone. My brother is telling me to just go with Cherry Bombs or Thrushes and call it a day ;o).

Well to start with I have never been impressed with Borla products (except the over-priced XR1 muffler which is nothing more than a stainless steel glasspack), nor am I impressed with the Borla family (business wise)... so I understand what you are saying. 2) There is no such thing as "High Flow Cats"....

The myth about high flow cats

Catalytic Converter Research News - Clearing Up the Myth About High Flow Catalytic Converters

With regards to the X-Pipe....An X-pipe will increase HP (slightly) and slightly change the tone if it is installed at the "area of confusion"- but that area is identified by painting a small strip on the exhaust pipes about 1/2 way between the engine and the axle- the area of confusion will cause increased heat and blister/burn the paint at that location- that's where the H or X pipe would be installed- and eliminates the air flow disturbance by sending alternating pulses in that location which acts as a "vacuum" if you will to push & scavenge the remaining and incoming air out. In all reality, a waste of $. IMHO, find a good old fashion muffler shop.... have them drop the borla mufflers off and see how it sounds... too loud, then have them hold up a resonator and listen to it again..... the longer the quieter it will be... Allied makes some really nice universal resonators that have a nice rumble, no tinny sound or drone and available nationwide at an muffler shop (they are plain label units)

I kind of like the GT500 axlebacks on the Cyclones. Get some take off Coyote over axle pipes and it should be noisy if that’s what you’re going for. Though I think it’s about the limit of a decent sounding exhaust and being loud.

You just answered you own question.
You could not remove your cats since if you live anywhere that has emissions the replacements are supposed to be the same as OEM not a supposed high flow unit that has no more flow and doesn't work as efficiently.
Also you would lose the resonators that stop more Drone and Rasp and put the drone back in which you admitted to not being a fan of.
X-Pipe will make the sound slightly lower but the biggest change is it smooths out the sound, it sounds more exotic

I also agree with what Recon said, there is a point the 3.7 Sounds like crap. Maybe I am getting old but the multi valve motors are not the same as the 2 valve per cylinder motors of the past.

Another question, is the oem stock exhaust an xpipe or hpipe? Would there be any benefit in sound replacing the stock one with a "better" one, which ever it is. I don't wanna go high flow cats, or resonator deletes, etc because I don't wanna throw cels or have to get a new tune.

The OEM is a Hybrid-X/H pipe. That is the reason I switched mine out to the true X-Pipe. The sound dropped down maybe an Octave and smoothed out, as I said before more exotic. I changed it out because I wanted the Torque bump in the lower to middle range, same reason I went with Short Tubes.
