Your 68 will not have 17 numbers. My 70 Stang only has 11 or so. I don't have the link (cuz I'm at work) but type in mustang decoder on yahoo and there are several out there. You will be able to learn all the original specs (ie: engine size, etc.) Here are a couple of sites:

http://www.classicmustang.com/vin_data_plates.htm

There is so much info out there and many knowledgeable people who are Mustang lovers...look into an online club like Vintage Mustang Forums. Good Luck

Maybe I'm slow, but isn't the VIN right on the dash? Check on the dashboard very near the windshield in the front left corner (in front of the steering wheel).

That's because VIN numbers weren't introduced until '81. Before that there's no way to track a car like VIN number do. So yeah, you'll have to take the seller at their word. You can also take it by a mechanic and have them look at it to see if it has any problems. Sorry.

Sorry, none of the on line sites will help since they didn't standardize VIN until 1981, and then set it at the 17 numbers we are now familiar.

Before that, each manufacturer had their own system.

You might try a search for a Mustang Club in your area.
