Today after finding a great deal on some new rims slightly used I tried to remove the stock wheels from my '05 v6. Each tire had a Mcgard locknut on it. While trying to take off the second wheel the key shattered leaving me with an empty socket and no way to get my wheels off. I checked how tight the bolts were on there and it's above 120lbs torque (installed by Canadian Tire when I bought my summer tires).

Does anybody here even bother with these lock nuts? They are designed to stop thieves but ended up just ruining my day. Any ideas for a fix? I've already called the shop and they said they only warrantee labour for 90 days. It's $40/per tire for the locknut removal.

If you don't wanna save the nuts, find the closest socket size, then go 1 smaller. Put the socket onto the nut, and hit it real hard with a mallet. The attach your rachet... When you get the nut off, it will be stuck to the socket. Pound it out with a screwdriver and the mallet. Repeat for all the nuts.
