I am looking to buy a 1966 mustang and wnat to place a new engine in it. I am looking for the most cost efficient and yet best way to get a engine. Lets start off with the type of engine i want, ford small block 302. I realized they have a variation of that enigne in the 3rd generation mustang and would like to know if it is best to get it from there or if not where should i shop around on the internet or around SoCal for the type of engine?

So you're looking for a Windsor 302? Those are common as dirt. For cheap, start at a junkyard. I got one there on a Pick Your Part sale day for $100 that worked as a temporary solution for a project car for a while (I still can't figure out why that Lincoln was there--looked pristine & the engine ran well). You can go anywhere from that to five-digits for a nice, built monster.

The engine in the project now (a 351W) came from a donor parts car. That cost us $350 & supplied the engine, trans, driveshaft, seats, wheels, and a few other miscellaneous bits & pieces. So there's another option; troll the local AutoTrader, Pennysaver, Craigslist for possible donors.
