Got a 97 a month back. Wondering what some of my first mods should be. It's all stock now. I know I want to put 4.10s on it. What else should I do. Not wanting to do anything to expensive right now. Keeping it under 1500$ all together for now.

Maybe a shifter, or exhaust. Congratulations on the buy. Any pictures?

When I get the gears, what is the best route to fix the speedometer error. So I can't get the correct mph

This goes back a number of years and different configurations on my 97 Cobra and if I remember right I did the exhaust system. Remember that you have 4 cats, 2 on each side and even deleting two can help alot. At the time there were very few people making equal length headers so I went with the FRPP shorty headers, Bassani cats and x pipe and left the stock mufflers. On the dyno the shorty headers made almost no difference until you got above 5500rpm showing the factory cast headers weren't all that bad.
I did a lot to the rear suspension, Steeda lower control arms, and Maximum Motorsports relocation brackets and panhard bar. I also did Eibach Sportlines and 17" Cobra R OE wheels with Comp TA's.
I took the 3.23's out and put in 3.73's...........unless you are planning to put a supercharger/blower on the motor or change the trans to a HD Tremec 6 speed I would only recommend going with 3.73's. The motor just doesn't have enough HP/TQ stock to pull much speed above 120mph in 5th............found this out the hard way while racing the Silver States Classic.
$1500 is a pretty slim budget to do very much.
What are your plans for the car....DD....Weekend Toy.....Drag Race.....Track???
Only have a few pictures of the 97 in my pictures as that was over 18 years ago.
The car was I think around 265HP ATRW stock and when I finished the N/A part is almost 310HP ATRW..............

It is my DD. I'm only 19 so I don't have a great amount of extra cash to dump into right now. I have read that a lot of people that had put in 3.73s wished that they would have went with the 4.10s. And the people with 4.10s were happy with them and glad they didn't put in 3.73s

Do the math and see what kind of RPM you would be running at 70/75mph with 3.73's and 4.10's. With my 3.73's I could pull down 26mph at 70mph....if gas mileage is of no concern go with 4.10's.........gears don't make a car faster although it feels like it is.
I'd like to see some pictures of the car and how many miles it has on it before suggesting a direction although it's your car and your money..........what direction do you want to head in.
I think the very first mod I did was to lower it and put on the original OE Cobra R wheels...17x9" with 24mm offset for the front and 17x9 with 35mm offset for the rear....these would clear the 13" brakes......back then we didn't have as many choices as you do now. I know I was waiting for the aftermarket to come out with 17x10" rear wheels.............never got any though.

Nice looking car.
I bought my 97 Cobra when it had 33 miles on it...........over the coarse of 4 years I did a lot of mod's to the car.......broke a transmission at around 17,000 and it along with the clutch were replaced under warranty. Also the drivers side seat started to wear and it was also replaced under warranty. After putting the Kenny Bell supercharger and trying to get 12lbs boost I broke the motor, then built one with better rods and pistons.....both are weak areas of this motor if you pound on them hard enough and with 100k+ on the odometer I would go out and start racing with it.............looks like a nice car.
I would do gears...........it's your choice........and depending on how much you have left I'd work on the exhaust and getting rid the four cats and going with a system that only has two. Or you could keep the 3.23's and get a nice set of wheels and tires and lower the car..............your choice.
