I was just informed by my mechanic that I need a header replaced on the right-side. He said it will run me from $190 or less. Do that sound about right? That includes 2hrs of labor at $65 per hr and the parts.

What year is the car? A lot depends on how much trouble he has getting to it to remove the part. If it is tough to get to, the price quoted isn't bad.

Usually headers or exhaust manifolds dont fail. the gasket maybe, but the headers no. All a header is collection of metal tubing to collect and flow exhaust out of the engine and a exhaust manifold is the same but a big cast iron piece. hte only way anything is going to happen to them is if there are some major modifications to the engine and it warp the manifold.

Anyways have them change the manifold gasket. It should run you 100 bucks maybe.

Price doesn't sound out of line. If it's a 5.0 the manifolds do crack, between the last two cylinders. Experience, that's why I bought a set of JBA shorty headers.

Sounds about right. I just had to do this on a 1995 3.8 car the other day. Their stainless steel headers are prone to crack right at the pipe for number 3 cylinder for some reason. In our case we ran the cracked header to the local exhaust shop where he just welded the crack. This saved the customer a little money.

Your car would have to be in pretty damn bad shape for the header to fail. Its a cast part that never moves. The gasket most likely went bad, and if the car is more than 5yrs old and has been driven in the rain or snow is rusted to the point where it could be a PITA. Time sounds good, and the price is alright for two gaskets (they're sold in sets) and time expecting some rust.
