I wonder WTF this thing ran in the quarter.... look at the weight and horsepower. Must have been one fast 4-banger...

The Ford Mustang Probe is an IMSA racer that competed in the Grand Touring Prototype series during the mid-eighties. Ford's racer shares part of its name with the sports coup that showed up on the scene just a few years later, but that's where the similarities end. It otherwise has nothing to do with the Ford Probe line, but that's just enough to gain a space here.

The Mustang Probe GTP sported a multi-port electronic fuel injected dual overhead cam 16-valve 2.1L 4-cylinder that produced an astounding 650 horsepower. The chassis consisted of carbon fiber composite and aluminum honeycomb modules that bolted together to form a full monocoque chassis and roll bar. The body panels were made up of a carbon fiber and Nomex honeycomb material. This extremely lightweight construction helped it reach a top speed of 230mph.

SPECIFICATIONS:
Engine: Inline four-cylinder, Ford Block
Displacement: 2.1 liters (129 CID)
Layout: Mid-Engine, Rear-Wheel Drive
Wheelbase: 104"
Length: 188"
Width: 78"
Height: 41"
Weight: 1980 lbs
Horsepower: 650 @ 8800 rpm
Torque: 351 ft/lbs @ 8800 rpm
Top Speed: 230mph

uh, still has more than us. but also think of it this way. torque is off the line power. race cars spend all their time in the power curve where horsepower is a factor. torque is good for getting them out of the pit, and thats about it. 351ft/lbs is enough. that car has about the same stats as F1 cars

It doesn't take that much torque to get 1980lbs moving. :wtf:
:D

Exactly my point..... a civic hatchback weights more than that, and with only 160hp B16A they run low 14s..... This thin on other hand, weights even LESS, has 650hp, and 351tq....... 7s? maybe?

And it's a 2.1L i4.... :D Honda H22 eat your heart out.. :)

Hey DE, Dont those things have a high potential for flipping over at high speeds?

With that little weight, I would think that those things can becone airborn too easy. :-?
That's true, I'm sure airdynamics of that car help though.. if all the weight - literally is in the front, and the front end is shaped that way - it looks like the car would literally dig under the air. I could be wrong... physics wasn't exactly my favorite subject
