Since getting my 98 GT, it has been a hard starter. I figured out that I can turn the key on and off three times to the accessory position and it will start on the third turn. For this reason I have been listening obsessively to the fuel pump sound. It has sounded normal until today. It made a strange grinding sound. Should I go ahead and replace it based on this? I have not been able to have the fuel pressure checked yet. What should I do ME?

I would say go ahead and replace the fuel pump. If your turning the key on and off 3 time then it starts fine that's classic fuel pump issue. I would only replace the fuel filter if you have had issues with a loss of power or if its been awhile since its been changed either way I would say that just replacing the fuel filter will not fix your problem.

Thank u for ur advice guys. The fuel filter is only four months and maybe fifteen hundred miles. I will just go ahead with the fuel pump. Thanx again! I LOVE this forum!!!!!

the pump kicks on and pressurizes the lines, could be the filter as said above (change it EVERY year!!!!)

you can check the pressure with a gauge on the fuel rail probably and see if it doesnt get to the correct pressure until a few attempts later

If the fuel filter was clogged he would have a loss of power when under load or WOT also if clogged bad enough to prevent starting the first few times it wouldn't all of a sudden unclog and start. The turning the key on and off primes the line so to speak more than likely due to the check valve at the pump allowing the fuel to drain from the supply line back to the tank over time
